Have you ever wondered what truly distinguishes an exceptional leader from the rest? In my last piece, I explained that simply having a managerial title doesn’t automatically make someone a leader. There’s a significant difference between managing and leading.
So, what is leadership, really? Sheryl Sandberg, previously the COO of Facebook, once brilliantly stated, “Leadership is about enhancing others through your presence and ensuring this improvement continues when you’re not around.”
The three key elements of outstanding leadership:
- Firstly, all remarkable leaders establish a clear goal and direction for their team. They know exactly what they’re doing and why. Such leaders firmly believe in their mission. When you’re part of a team led by a great leader, you feel your work has purpose and impact. You understand the importance of your role.
- Secondly, clear communication is vital. Top leaders don’t just send endless emails from behind their desks. Instead, they engage directly with their team. These leaders communicate clearly, positively, and effectively. They make you feel valued and an integral part of the team. Even during tough times, they inspire commitment and actively seek your input, making you feel valued for your ideas.
- Lastly, and perhaps most crucially, excellent leaders lead by example. They would never expect you to do something they wouldn’t do themselves. Their actions and work ethic set the standard for the whole team.
Reflect on your own qualities. Do you exhibit an attitude, time management, emotional intelligence, and behavior that others respect and strive to emulate? Are you proud of how you communicate and accomplish tasks? Do people feel uplifted in your company? If yes, you might already possess the qualities of a great leader. Think about individuals, past or present, renowned for their leadership. What traits do they share? Consider historical figures or people you know. What makes them stand out as leaders? How would they inspire you if you were part of their team?
